Choosing Classes

Class Selection Guidelines

The best guide for choosing classes is the Course Catalog, which is embedded in our Family Grid, where you should carefully review the course descriptions, requirements, and expectations to select options that align with your abilities as a parent, your student's needs, and your homeschool routine.

Here are the key requirements and guidelines for choosing classes:

General Class Selection Rules

  • No Auditing: Students must complete all required homework for any class they enroll in, as auditing (attending without completing work) is not permitted.

  • No Customization: You are agreeing to participate in the class as the teacher has designed it; classes cannot be customized to individual students in content, grading, or workload.

  • Parent Involvement: As primary educators, parents are required to remain involved, set high standards, and monitor the completion of assignments.

  • Class Placement and Changes:

    • If a class is not working out, communicate with the teacher first. Schedule changes are sometimes available but require a scheduled meeting with Allycia Taussig.

    • If a student is inappropriately placed for the level of a class, teachers and administration will work with you to reassign the student. You can consult Allycia Taussig (ataussig@jeffcoschools.us) for assistance with class levels.

    • Cooking Class Restrictions: A student cannot repeat the same cooking class two years in a row, and they may only take one kitchen class per year.

Guide to Course Descriptions

The course descriptions contain essential details to help you choose the right classes:

  • Prerequisites: Any required previous coursework, level of achievement, placement materials (e.g., a sample essay), or instructor approval will be listed. Students who do not meet these requirements will be reassigned.1

  • Grade Level: The listed range is a helpful tool, but you must read the descriptions to ensure your student can meet the class requirements. Requests for classes outside a student's registered grade level may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

  • Homework Hours per Week: This estimate is provided to give you an idea of the outside work required. The actual time may vary greatly depending on your student's abilities.

  • Course Curriculum and Fees:

    • Primary Text: If a course is based on a specific curriculum (e.g., Saxon Math), it will be listed, and Summit South will purchase and distribute it on Launch Day.

    • Class Fee: Summit South pays for consumable curriculum materials. See the SAS 2026-27 Course Fees for additional course-specific material costs that will be added if a student registers for class.

    • Course Type: It is important to distinguish between the two types of classes:1

    • Supplemental: These courses enhance and support the curriculum you are teaching at home.1

    • Stand-Alone: These are academically robust, full-curriculum courses. They provide full course content and materials, but they require daily work and at-home support from a homeschooling adult since all instructional needs cannot be met in a once-a-week schedule.

Class Changes

  • Schedule Change Guidelines:

    • Parents may make changes using the Schedule Change form until 9/19/2025.

    • Only parents may make schedule changes.

    • Students must be enrolled in six (6) different classes.

    • High school students (grades 9-12) receive a WP (withdrawal passing) or WF (withdrawal failing) on their permanent transcript for dropped classes.

    • High school students may change classes at the semester with principal and parent approval, but changes may only be made between December 1 and 18, 2026.
